Written by Tucker Carwile

Roads Taken is a collection of some of Tucker Carwile’s favorite poems. They were selected because they show the roads he has taken, whether right or wrong, and express the emotional range of a life well lived. Written over a period of years, this collection of work is the expression of his true vocation. These are poems of sorrow and pain, battles and spirituality, the loss of friends, the beauty of nature, humor reminiscent of the past, changes over time, and love and joy found. Tucker’s decision to pursue a career instead of following his passion for writing led him down many roads away from poetry, and away from his true soul mate. The fifth and powerful final section of poems, “Roads to Happiness,” captures the long-awaited reunion with his beloved. After traveling miles of roads, they both ultimately discover the true contentment that only real devotion can give.

Meet the Author

Tucker Carwile was born and raised in the Hampton Roads area of Tidewater, Virginia, where he lives today. His youth was centered on the neighborhood and friends, sailing, bicycling, building treehouses, cutting grass each summer, playing football on Saturdays, and church on Sundays. This is where he first met Becky, who would later become his partner in life. After many years apart, they reunited, having taken different roads often filled with sorrow and sadness.

Taught in the principles of religion, Tucker learned early on that life can be much more complex, not as written in fairy tales. He has traveled extensively, exploring the beauty of nature and the tranquility of solitude. His biggest wonders have always been contemplating his choices in life and “what-ifs.”

Whether walking beaches and the streets of cities and towns, or camping in God’s house beneath tall pines and mountains, Tucker has written down his thoughts and feelings about everyday life. He started writing during college and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Christopher Newport College. This is where he also developed a love for teaching, but he took many entrepreneurial roads before he was able to return to his love of teaching and complete his journey.

Tucker published his first book of free verse, Lone Sentinel, in 2013. Roads Taken is his second collection, and he expects to complete a third collection in the future.

Endorsements

“These are some of the author’s best works. You can’t help but identify with his voice as he explores everyday things, life and feelings. Some poems sensuous, but sweet, others romantic, childlike, patriotic or thought provoking. Everyone will enjoy and share in these thoughts and experiences, ultimately believing in happiness and true love.”

~ Ann T. Scott, MA English, University of Michigan

“The poems within allowed me to see into the author’s character and life experience. Honest, straightforward reflections of feelings, loss and love. Richness in each turn of the page.”

~ Michael G. Pacyga, musician, songwriter

“Roads Taken is a really enjoyable book, and easy reading, of a man in love. A very feel-good book, making you, the reader, think back about earlier days.”

~ Barbara Lynn Thomas, education registered nurse

“Mr. Carwile provides a glimpse into his life’s journey, through a childhood steeped in playful memories, to his middle years of questioning the meaning of life and death, and reflecting on friendships. He comes full circle, through his poems of happiness, joy, despair and on again to happiness, continuing his life’s journey. His poems are insightful and reflect his trials and tribulations as a boy growing up in the sixties, to a man in his sixties finding love again, seemingly for the first time. I found myself, as the character in his poems, relating to my life in his poetry.”
